Recreation Advisory Board Meeting Minutes - November 4, 2013

The meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m.

Ms. Alou made a motion to approve the minutes of the October 7, 2013, meeting. Motion seconded by Ms. Cawn and unanimously approved.

Mr. Estep gave a summary of the recreation programs at this time. The Intramural Soccer program has 260 enrolled and Aftercare has 75 enrolled. Mr. Estep said there is a new 8 foot fence surrounding the basketball courts.

Discussion turned to the 5K. It was related that 236 race bibs were sold but 209 runners actually ran the race. The cost of the race was $7400. $5200 was generated from race entries and $6400 was generated from sponsorships. It was suggested that more age groups be added in the kids division next year. It was also suggested that an Elite group be added. Over 40 kids ran in the Under 14 age group. It was noted that scheduling the race the first day of daylight savings time was successful. About $4000 was generated from the race excluding staff costs. Thirteen police officers worked the 5K.

Ms. Wiborg suggested having a fishing tournament in the future. Mr. Estep noted upcoming events include winterfest, the holiday light contest and the caroling hayride.

Miami Shores resident Eddie Lewis, who is the governor of the South Florida Optimist Club spoke at this time. Mr. Lewis would like the Optimist Club to be a sponsor of the fishing tournament. Mr. Lewis also noted that the Optimist Club would like to help with any future Commission events.

It was noted that a television camera is in the police department’s budget, and they are working to have it operational at the Tot Lot. Mr. Estep noted that starting this weekend   IDs will be checked to verify residency at the Tot Lot.
