Minutes of the Recreation Advisory Committee held on September 21, 2015.

The meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m.

Mr. O’Hara made a motion to approve the minutes of the June 1, 2015, meeting. Motion seconded by Mr. Meltz and unanimously approved.

Mr. Estep related that there were 19 different summer camps offered this year. On average there were 350 enrolled weekly, with the highest week totaling 375 campers. Recreation netted $235,000 from all the summer camps.

It was noted that Flag Football has 54 registered and the Girls Powder Puff program has 8 registered. Aftercare has 70 enrolled in the program. Intramural Soccer registration has begun with 137 registered to date. The majority of the programs at the Community Center are also at maximum capacity.

It was noted that Adam Madarassy is the new swim coach for Miami Shores and is also running a masters swim program. There are 25 members on the new swim team thus far. Mr. Madarassy is paying a rental fee to the Village for use of the pool.

Mr. Estep related that October 24 is Green Day and October 3 is Dog Day At The Pool. The pool will be drained in December/January for regular maintenance.

Council has requested that all Village boards give a brief summary of what each board has accomplished. The Commission is scheduled to report at the Council’s October 6 meeting. It was noted that Council has had their budget meetings at the Community Center this summer.

It was noted that the new scoreboards are up and running. The timing and scoring are much easier. It was noted that Aftercare is capped at 70 children due to space limitations.

It was related that the contract for travel baseball has not been signed yet.

Mr. Estep said that there have been issues with deed restrictions on the recreation center. The Village has retained attorney Abbie Salt to resolve the issues. The Village is looking at

June 2016 to have an election for a bond for the new recreation facility. It was noted that the price tag of the new center will be a hard sell. It was reiterated that the facility needs to be built right the first time so that changes/additions will not be needed in the future.
