Job Description:

JOB SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of the Police Sergeant or Lieutenant, performs a variety dispatching duties for emergency and non-emergency calls; may perform others duties as assigned.

 

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:      

  • Receives emergency and non-emergency calls for service, and dispatches field units to emergency situations;
  • Determines nature of call, location, and priority of calls and dispatches units accordingly;
  • Provides assistance, information and directions to non-emergency callers;
  • Maintains awareness of field units’ activities within the computer aided dispatch (CAD) system, and maintains status and location of units on patrol;
  • Monitors fire department frequency for emergency situations requiring police involvement;
  • Inputs all pertinent radio transmissions into CAD system;
  • Retrieves information from state, county and national computer networks regarding wanted persons, stolen property, vehicle registrations, and other related information;
  • Responds to public inquires in a courteous manner, provides information within the scope of responsibility, and resolves complaints in an efficient and timely manner; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with others.

 

The duties of a communications officer involve answering emergency and non-emergency telephone calls, ranging in nature from noise complaints to serious crime reports. Communications officers receive, categorize, prioritize, monitor calls and dispatch radio communications to the appropriate police officers. Communications officers deliver important information to police officers on suspects. Other responsibilities include creating digital or written reports, lists and logging information based on the call received. The communications officer must maintain professionalism, courtesy, and composure at all times, including emergency and high-stress situations. The position entails shift work, allowing for 24-hour coverage.

 

Minimum Requirements

  • Be a United States citizen at time of application.
  • Be at least 19 years of age upon appointment.
  • Be of good moral character and have never been convicted of the following:
    • Felony offense
    • Misdemeanor offense involving perjury, or false statement
  • Have received an honorable discharge from any of the armed forces of the United States.
  • Have graduated from a standard high school or possess an equivalent education.

 

For applicants that are PST Certified, proof of PST Certification and/or Public Safety Telecommunicator Certification with training curriculum from a home or state academy must be provided with application.

 

An eligible veteran who enters an open-competitive examination shall receive preference points added to the total passing score earned in the examination process as provided for in the Florida Statutes. To obtain, Veteran's preference, candidates MUST attach a copy of their separation papers and the Veteran's preference claim form to their application.
