Our Library flourishes because of an inspiring history of support by Miami Shores residents. Brockway Memorial Library owes its very existence to the generosity of two early villagers, Roy H. Hawkins, then General Manager of Bessemer Properties, and George A. Brockway —who donated the land on which the library stands and the funds to build the library, respectively. The initial collection consisted of 4,182 volumes, books donated by residents and civic organizations.
As the collection and programs grew, library expansions were undertaken in 1961, in 1984, and most recently in 2002, when a 2,500-square-foot Multi-Media Room was built entirely with grants and money donated by the generous members of the community. Today, over 68,000 books and audio-visual materials, as well as computers, are housed in a pleasant, safe, accessible and well-maintained building. Ongoing activities include a variety of children’s and adults' programs, seasonal celebrations, art exhibits, book clubs, workshops, and special guest presentations.
