Program Description

Our wish for this project is to turn the Brockway Memorial Library courtyard into a beautiful children’s garden that will provide habitat and food for all types of pollinators.   We hope it will not only be a tool to bring students closer to nature, but also serve as a vital sanctuary to the dwindling honey bee and monarch butterfly populations.

This space would be in honor of our Children’s Librarian, Anne Kelly, who retired after 32 years and our former Library Director, Elizabeth Esper, who retired after 45 years! The students of the Roots and Shoots club will work to plant, create, and care for the space. We will be building raised beds for planting herbs and flowers. We wish for this space to be a place where children can feel accountable for something they created and be proud of the work they are doing to help beautify the space, as well as honor a valued Children’s Librarian and Library Director.

Our project will provide opportunities for students to learn about the interdependence of ecosystems as well as how they can be student activists and take steps to make the world a better place, and improve their own community.
