RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD MEETING

MARCH 4, 2013

The meeting was called to order at 7:05 p.m.

Ms. Borja made a motion to approve the minutes of the February 4, 2013, meeting. Motion seconded by Mr. Meltz and unanimously approved.

Mr. Estep gave a summary of the recreation programs at this time, noting that softball and baseball registration is ongoing, with 175 enrolled for baseball and 23 enrolled for softball. Aftercare has 74 enrolled.

Mr. Meltz commended the recreation department on Unity Day. It was noted that the attendance was down about one third from last year. There were more sponsors and booths this year. Ms. Cawn noted that the bike valet was a great idea. It was suggested that there be a better area and signage for the putting contest; more exposure for the event was needed. It was suggested that there be a putting contest for children. It was noted that the lines were shorter this year for rides. A suggestion was made to sell coffee/espresso next year as well as funnel cake and cotton candy.

Mr. Estep related that Shipwreck Cove opens on March 23. New lounge chairs have already been ordered. It was noted that the children in the spring break camps will go to the Egg Dive earlier this year, between 12 – 1 pm.

The Fine Arts spring concert will take place on April 7, featuring the local band Groovedogz. It was related that the 5k race is scheduled for Sunday, November 3. The recreation department is requesting a grant request from the Mayor’s Community Alliance for the 5k.

Mr. Estep noted that some of the capital improvements the department is working on are three new dugouts and laser leveling the athletic fields.
