Rec Advisory Board Minutes May 7, 2012

Minutes of the Recreation Advisory Committee held on May 7, 2012.

The meeting was called to order at 7:10 p.m.

 

Ms. Alou made a motion to approve the minutes of the April 2, 2012, meeting. Motion seconded by Mr. Meltz and unanimously approved.

 

Mr. Estep gave a summary of the recreation programs at this time. There are a total of 201 registered for baseball, 40 registered for softball, 35 registered for little shots, 68 registered for aftercare and 52 registered for football. It was noted that summer camp registration has begun. For the summer the gymnastics program will relocate to Doctors Charter School, and there will also be basketball and volleyball camps offered at St. Rose of Lima gym.

 

Mr. Estep related that 350 attended the Egg Dive held on April 6 and 1200 attended the Marshmallow Drop on April 7.

 

Mr. Estep announced that Stacy Philpott is be leaving the recreation department after 18 years and that Jacki Morris will be assuming the position of Program Coordinator. Maurice Johnson has also been promoted to the Assistant Athletic Supervisor.

 

It was noted that Barry University allowed the use of their field for the baseball program. The recreation department is hopeful that Barry may allow the use of their fields for travel baseball and travel soccer next year.

 

Mr. Meltz inquired about the possibility of Miami Shores hosting a 5k race. It was noted that a timing system for the race would cost approximately $3000, and there would also be costs for police and barricades. Mr. Estep noted the cost for the recent spring concert was $1700 for staffing and street closures. Mr. Meltz would like an estimate of the costs to see if having a 5k race is financially feasible. Mr. Meltz made a motion to explore the costs involved with sponsoring a 5k race and to draft a letter to solicit possible sponsorships. Motion seconded by Ms. Alou and unanimously approved.
